Demonstrating God's love by meeting people's practical needs and restoring self worth.
We collect donated furniture, recycling it, so that we are able to provide furniture to people on benefits, for a nominal fee. We have a dedicated support centre on the Oxford Road, where people in need can come to ask for furniture and receive friendship and signposting to other agencies for specific help, for example, with benefits. We also work and support our local communities through our 5 charity shops. We also have a pre-used furniture store located at Silver Street in Reading.
Why the community needs usChristian Community Action (CCA) is a Reading charity committed to helping local people who are in need. We offer: A listening ear at our support centres; Essential furniture items from our warehouse; Affordable goods through our charity shops; Work opportunities for those finding their way back into the workplace.Above all we value individuals just as God does.
Our impact on the communityIn 2015, we helped over 4,500 people in need of essential furniture items: emergency kitchen and bedding packs, food supplies; signposting and referral to other specialist services for debt and benefit advice. At present we have six charity/community shops along with support centres and a Furniture Outlet which help to finance the assistance we give as well as providing a place to call in for a cup of tea and a listening ear.
We always need volunteers to work in our charity shops, which involves: sorting donations, pricing them, displaying the goods on the shop floor and sometimes operating the till. We also need people to go out on the vans to deliver furniture to clients and to work in our admin office. We are also particularly looking for someone to set up an online shop for us on ebay to sell items that are more valuable or would not sell very well in a charity shop.
